ROOTED IN CHRIST
Session Two Audio Teaching
Ephesians 1:3-6
Adopted
Session Summary
In this passage, Paul begins his letter with praise, declaring that God has blessed believers in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Chief among these blessings is God’s eternal choice of His people. Paul emphasizes that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world—not based on merit, talent, or foreseen goodness, but out of His sovereign love. His purpose in choosing us was that we might be holy and blameless before Him.
Paul then explains that God not only chose us but also predestined us for adoption as His sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. Adoption is a powerful picture of our salvation. In the Roman world, adoption was not about rescuing infants but about granting full inheritance rights to an heir. Similarly, in Christ we are given the privileges of belonging to God’s family: security, affection, fellowship, and access to the Father.
This reality would have been especially striking against the Old Testament background, where God’s holiness emphasized the vast chasm between Him and His people. But in the New Testament, through Jesus, believers are invited to know God as Father. Jesus’ sonship becomes the model for our own, so that we too can cry out, “Abba, Father.”
The implications of adoption are life-changing. We are permanently secure in God’s family, cherished by a Father who delights in us, never abandoned, and given bold access to His presence. Adoption is not an afterthought of salvation but one of its highest privileges.
At the heart of this passage lies the purpose of it all: “to the praise of his glorious grace.” Our adoption, like our election, is designed to magnify the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ, the Beloved Son who gave His life so that we might become children of God and heirs with Him.
In short: God’s eternal plan was not only to forgive us but to make us His sons and daughters through Christ.
